Ohio Counties Combine DHS Grant Preparedness Funding Efforts

US States News

CINCINNATI  : The city of Cincinnati issued the following press release:

Beginning in 2003, the City of Cincinnati and Hamilton County combined efforts utilizing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) grant preparedness funding to enhance local terrorism and all hazards response capabilities.

In 2006, Cincinnati/Hamilton County formalized the Southwestern Ohio-Southeastern Indiana-Northern Kentucky (SOSINK) Homeland Security Regional Steering Committee comprised of membership from this twelve county tri state region. SOSINK has since been working collaboratively, and this multi- jurisdictional planning committee has made substantial progress with enhancing homeland security response readiness through the combined efforts of Fire, EMS, EMA, Law Enforcement, Public Health, Hospitals and other disciplinary groups partnering at many different levels on several different projects.

The SOSINK region has recently deployed twelve mass casualty units and twelve decontamination units for emergency response throughout Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. This equipment will be on display at this National Preparedness Month Event recognizing the commitment by those jurisdictions that have come to the forefront in the interests of regional homeland security preparedness. Without this kind of ongoing dedication, as demonstrated by these Fire, EMA, and EMS Departments for this project, the region in which our families live, work, and interact would be at much greater risk.

In collaboration with the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal, this National Preparedness Month Event will take place on Thursday, September 11th, 2008, beginning at 11am and ending at 12:30pm. Along with Hamilton County Commissioner Todd Portune, Mayor Mark Mallory will deliver remarks and present a proclamation honoring National Preparedness Month in the City of Cincinnati.
