Data integration center to open in W.Va.
HONOLULU — A new Department of Homeland Security research center has opened on the campus of the University of Hawaii.
The National Center for Island, Maritime and Extreme Environment Security is a partnership with the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez.
It is one of five in the U.S. and is projected to bring in $8 million in federal funding over the next four to six years.
Roy Wilkins, the center's director, says the research includes everything from long-range radar to detect ships and low-flying aircraft to gathering and sorting through information on the Internet to keep track of shipping.
UH was selected for the center after putting together a proposal that competed against proposals from other universities.
